They have different names for them. A trolley, a pump trolley etc. Well, I found myself in need of using one not too long ago. The woman that I was living with required me to dispatch a letter to our landlord, the letter was sealed and enclosed was our month's rent. The truth is, I hated to use the thing. I didn't like the sound it made, and because this was a style that didn't allow for seating, I always worried I'd lose my footing and fall. There were also things hanging from it, laundry set out to dry that the woman refused to allow me to move. I was embarrassed by the time I reached the town, with all the eyes that watched as I climbed down from the trolley and made my way to the post office. I was further embarrassed when I learned that my roommate had called the post office with a message that I was to go to the seamstress for her. I wasn't dressed for it, my skirt was tinged in brown from many days use while carrying out the chores necessary for our survival. I can't begin to tell you how I found myself leaving the seamstresses on the arm of an insistent woman, sure that I was the lady come to fit myself for wedding garb.
