"Hide and Seek" was released in 2005 and is an American psychological horror-thriller. It did well at the box office with a $122.7 million dollar return on a $25 million dollar budget.
CAST
Amy Irving - Allison Callaway
Robert De Niro - David Callaway
Dakota Fanning - Emily Callaway
Famke Janssen - Katherine Carson
Elisabeth Shue - Elizabeth Young
Dylan Baker - Sheriff Hafferty
Melissa Leo - Laura
Robert John Burke - Steven
Dr. David Callaway, a psychologist in New York City, finds his wife dead in their bloody bathtub after what appears to be a suicide. David decides to move to upstate New York with his daughter, Emily. Emily begins to have an imaginary friend, Charlie. Her friendship with Charlie begins to be disturbing when David finds a dead cat in the bathtub; and Emily says it was Charlie who did it. In the meantime, David has nightmares about the New Year's Eve party that was held the night before his wife died.
David meets Elizabeth Young, a local woman who has a daughter around Emily's age. Hoping to find a new friend for Emily, David sets up a play date with Elizabeth's daughter, Amy. Amy is very eager to make friends with Emily; but the play date ends badly when Emily cuts up a doll's face. Emily tells David that she doesn't need any more friends.
Although the plot was considered illogical, this film did extraordinarily well at the box office. De Niro and Fanning do a great job of portraying their characters; and the movie definitely has an eerie feel to it. It's full of surprises and will not turn out the way that you expect it to. I've seen it three times now; and even though I know how it ends, I still enjoy watching it for the suspense value. It's definitely a good movie for popcorn and a Friday or Saturday night viewing without the children. This is a thumbs up for me.
This movie is rated R.
