How are your shopping experiences?

I walked in to a wall - - - mart yesterday and found an item that I might want to purchase but it didn't have a price. As I wanted to know the price before deciding approached an employee and asked her how much it was. She told me to go a computer station and scan it but when I got to the scanner it was in use. Instead of pursuing I calmly checked out some other items I was willing to buy and left the store. The item I didn't know the cost of I tossed onto a nearby shelf. I know I could have made my buying decision at the checkout instead but I am put off by the lack of pricing and the service we now get in stores.

I know that the bigger walmart's have price scanners but they are not strategically placed and people forget about the. The woman should have said "stay right here and I'll check on that for you.", but then it's not really her fault either. Walmart isn't customer service oriented.

@mynameiskate I don't think they are very customer service oriented, and I've heard some stories about working for Walmart. I've had friends and family that have worked for them, but it seems (atleast around here) lately that Walmart doesn't want to pay benefits to it's employees so they try to find a reason to fire them at their 90 day evals.

@ScribbledAdNauseum I guess you to don't get to the top without cutting some corners.

I would have appreciated the effort if the employee had helped me rather than pointing a finger. Strange not customer service oriented but 15th on the list?

Sigh. Such situations happen. I purchased some ten items in the grocery, and when I gave my discount booklet to the cashier, she used my booklet to swipe off the dirt on the counter. That infuriated me. It was disrespectful of other people's things. I did report her to Customer Service. Hmpf.

@mynameiskate A thankless job it is, but I do it because somebody has got to teach them the proper decorum. True, most salespeople come from the marginalized families in society. They earn a meager daily wage, and the work hours are long, the job exhausting. The customer service did hear a piece of my mind, but I made sure I reported not to make someone lose her job, but to help workforce with the proper demeanor in the workplace - the good old Good Manners and Right Conduct.

I suspect that many workers are either untrained or don't take their work seriously. Low pay or poor working conditions can lower the expectations we might have for these employees. I do sympathize with their conditions. Do they understand they can't behave like they might at home when on the job dealing with other people? Customer service should thank you for providing a service for their benefit by reporting on her performance. It isn't your job to do so but you helped them just the same by reporting the conduct.

I've actually worked at walmart. Yes, they have scanners around the stores but they don't always work and, like your experience, some people will stand there and scan a whole cart full of stuff with no regards to anyone else around them. (Employees also have the problem because they figure out what register they're going on and a list of jobs for the day) People working on the floor usually can't help you but if you go to a cashier (provided you'r store still has them) they can tell you, if you don't want it just tell that person & they'll take care of putting it away.

It is good to know the problems exists in other places too. I was thinking it might be regional to my area. As a customer my greatest concern is allowing myself to disregard pricing and just toss products into the cart without regard. So I think what I might do in the future is bring the items to the front checkout and make a quick decision there. Shopping is getting complicated? I see people shopping online while in the store. They actually use handhelds to get the best product but that is a little over the top for me. I remember a day when there wasn't as much. It made it a lot more simple.

I love shopping when I can afford it. No problems.

If this happens only once in a while and not regularly, I wouldn't make a fuss about it, especially as you'll get to know the price at the checkout only minutes later.

I don't make a fuss anymore but walk away if something isn't to my satisfaction. Making a decision is sometimes not so easy and I would rather do it before the checkout. But when in Rome...

Poor service often ruins the purchase.
