More popularly known as Ssi it's given to people with disability which cannot work for their food. I was not aware of ssi but just came to know it from a post. Is everyone who is disable given the ssi? Is this only applicable in USA?

There may be other programs similar to SSI in other countries, but as far as I am aware, there is only one SSI and it's in the US. Is everyone that is disabled given the SSI? I don't think that's a question that any of us can really answer. There are people who are disabled physically but still able to work and so do not get SSI. SSI is for people who are unable to work. You can have some outside income and still receive SSI but the amount you earn outside of the SSI has to be under a certain amount.

@Butterfingers You can also not qualify for SSI based on your disability. If you can't give proof that you are unable to work, they won't give you SSI.

No, not everyone gets the money and I know quite a few that really do need it but they just keep refusing them.

@Butterfingers Sometimes its just like that. A lot of people here are just having to get by with help from other people as they cannot work a normal job. There are all kinds of disabilities that are not classed as such.

Even in India, something similar exists. I know of a plumber whose brother has caused partial disability and gets some money under a government scheme.

It's a well structured thing in US. In India too we have disability pension which is quite low. This government has increased it a bit and also they have included a lot more disabilities in it from what it was before. You need to have a disability certificate to get it. My friend's son is seven years and he is getting 750 per month and also some rebate on his education.

People that are approved for ssi usually have to prove their medical condition stating that they are not physically able to work. It takes a long time still to get approval and usually has to get signed off by a physician and an attorney who is an expert on helping those who need it to get it.
