I am not aware of why 26th December is called as Boxing day but know for certain that various sports events are held on this day. One with which we are familiar is Test match cricket held at Australia and South Africa every year on this day without fail.

It's called Boxing Day because there was a tradition in the 19th Century for tradesmen in England to go round the houses they served with collection boxes on the day after Christmas Day, asking for donations in appreciation for their services over the past year. In England and the countries which were part of the Empire this became a public holiday. America and other countries didn't have this tradition, so they never called t Boxing Day, but some of the countries which were once part of the British Empire still keep the day as a holiday. You can call it 'the day after Christmas Day' if you like, of course, but it's a bit clumsy. You can also call it St. Stephen's Day (which it is - the day on which Good King Wenceslaus went out, if you know the carol!) or Boxing Day.

@cool83 Yes, we always call it Boxing Day. As I said, it's a holiday, so it's often a good time to meet family whom one didn't see over Christmas or just to go for a walk or something to work off all that extra food one ate over Christmas!

Boxing Day can be the putting in the box of the gifts. It can also mean a day for fighting. Now, what is Boxing Day there about?

There's a Boxing day too in Canada that happens after Christmas. I read about the history of this Boxing Day, but I forget about it.
