"The joy of the sport and the honor of good sportsmanship are more valuable than any gold medal," writes Jefferson Genuelas
This is to recognize the heroic deed of a Filipino surfer Roger Casugay who saved Indonesian competitor, Arhip Nurhidayat from drowning when the tie to his surf broke and lost his surfing board.
Roger was quick to rescue Arhip and shared his board and they went ashore safe.
Roger is hailed as a hero in the entirety of Southeast Asia games not for a gold medal nor broke a certain record but of his heroism in saving the Indonesian surfer.

Sportsmanship and community or team spirit are more valuable virtues of a sportsman. Gold medals are just added achievements. He truly is a hero.

Exactly. This is the sport story genuine athletes are made of. Training is never easy. Often, it is a lonely activity done alone. The aim is to win that gold. Yet, when circumstances such as you described happens, the character of the athlete surfaces. This one deserves to be hailed.
