Yep, it's time again for your favorite atheist (well, #2. Market research shows that Robbie Fulks polls higher than me) to bring a little Jesus into your lives with Jesus is the Reason for the Season, a 17-song countdown of songs with "Jesus" in the title. We are at #11: "Jesus and Tequila" by the Minutemen.
Until the 1985 death of vocalist/guitarist D. Boon, San Pedro, California's Minutemen were one of America's greatest punk bands. Much like The Clash, who integrated other styles into their sound, the Minutemen threw elements of country, jazz, spoken word, and even acid rock into their punk. Their 1984 album, Double Nickels on the Dime, is an American punk classic, a double LP, with each of the three band members choosing which songs would appear on separate sides (a nod to Pink Floyd, who did it in 1969 for their album, Ummagumma.)
"Jesus and Tequila" appears on side four, the "Chaff" side, consisting of songs that didn't make the cut for the first three sides (the band's covers of Van Halen's "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love" and Steely Dan's "Dr. Wu" also appear on side four.)
"Yeah, normally, Jesus is just alright, but damn, get enough tequila in him, and all bets are off. Starts doing all this cool magic. Walking on water, sneaking fish into bread, making wine, dudes a trip!" - Peter.
