Today I cooked something I normally never cook. I wanted to taste Navy beans ... a food from the past. My mother used to cook them ... and oh my, they were so creamy, good. My Navy beans turned out good but ... not anywhere as good as I remember hers tasting. Sometimes, we wish for those things our mothers used to make. This was one of those times for me. They weren't quite satisfying because ... they weren't just like my mother's cooking. It will probably be a long time before I try cooking them again. I think at this time of the year we are thinking of our loved ones who are gone ... we try to feel closer by doing something they did that was special to us. Now ... I just thought of all the kinds of cakes she used to make at Christmas time. No, I won't be trying to cook all that during the holidays. Our meal will be roasted turkey, gravy, dressing, cranberry sauce with whole berries, sweet peas ... and coconut cream pie and banana nut bread. Skip wants ham, also. What are you guys cooking for your special holiday meals? Do you have any simple recipes for a sweet that doesn't take a lot to make? I would be interested in hearing if you do. Thank you!

Girl, you're a NC girl and you've never cooked dry navy beans?! I love several types and they're so healthy for us. Have you made sugared peanuts? You just boil shelled raw peanuts with the skins still on in sugared water until all the water is gone and crunchy sugar coats the peanuts. Then bake them for 30 minutes until the peanuts are done. Easy and yummy. Merry Christmas!

I will probably make some potato candy to take to my aunt's gathering, but I am not sure. I made cornbread dressing for Thanksgiving and took that. I have been wishing that I had found my mom's recipe for reese's cupcakes. I looked for her recipe when she passed away, but either someone had already taken it or she had given it to someone or had thrown it away herself at some point.

@GrannyGee I am sorry they were not as you remembered them. Wasn't that your first try? Maybe next time they will taste like you remembered. I did not make laktkes like we eat on Hannuka but did fried potatoes and onions instead and grilled cheese.
