I remember how I fed our undernourished school children 3 years ago as a school principal of Balabag Elementary School. Statistics show that 66 millions school children are underfed. No learning could take place for an empty stomach kids in a particular school if they're many of them. Imagine that big undernourished and malnourished children representing the various schools in the entire Philippines. They go to school eating insufficient foods due to poverty. Sad to note, the foods they eat lack the needed vitamins and mineral for their body to resist the rigorous activities in the school. In a particular school with more than 100 underfed pupils, it would be a big challenge for the head of the school. He would be compelled to secure the needed foods to the identified feeding beneficiaries. He would be resourcing to some generous persons in the community. He even gives a portion of his salary to sustain the feeding program for the said recipient of feeding activity. School-Based Feeding Program (SBFP) It is one of the aims of the Department of Education (DepEd) to educate the children to be strong, healthy and law-abiding citizen of his country. It couldn't be realized if there are weak children in the school because of insufficient foods they eat every day. Those kids would be deprived of the quality education they need when they'll always absent for they're sick. They couldn't sustain school activities for their unhealthy condition of their body. The DepEd has come up with the school-based feeding program by issuing guidelines and regulations to the school recipient all over the country. The Balabag Elementary School, one of the small schools in the small division of La Carlota City, Philippines in which I am the school principal,is one of the recipients of this feeding program. The school would receive more than One Hundred Sixty Four Thousand Pesos (Php 164,000.00) for this program. To implement this program, I met with the parents of the beneficiaries and challenged them to support and sustain this program. They had afreed to render service during the preparation of the foods, cooking, and serving the kids during lunch time. This feeding program would last for 120 days. Those recipiend kids whose weights are below the normal scale would be normalized. And they would become vigorous, strong and could resist the various activities in the school without getting weak and sick. Copyright by Gil Camporazo
