Still to Visit: Alaska

Before I start the new year with a music countdown you'll love I am going to look at the eleven states I haven't been to yet. I'm doing with ulterior motives: anyone who's been there can hopefully tell me what to make sure to see when I go there!!!
These are alphabetical, so here we go with my only "A" state.
Haven't Visited: Alaska
The Northern Lights. Oh, heck, I've seen videos of them, and they're mind-boggling. To see them in person? Wow, I don't know if I'll survive. To me, that's the main thing to see if/when I visit the almost-final frontier (it's the 49th state).
Other things that I know about Alaska (other than it's dang cold this time of year) include the fact that it has the most national parks -- eight -- of any state. The best-known of the eight, I suppose, is Denali National Park. It's home of Denali (Mt. McKinley), the highest point in the United States.
Then there are the fjords. No, not the home of Henry Fjord.
A fjord is a waterway that goes between cliffs in icy places, such as Alaska (and Norway). I've seen videos of those amazing blueish ice in those icebergs. It's unbelievable. And, as with so many other things I've seen, I know the videos are NOTHING in comparison to seeing it in person.
I'd love to take a train from Washington (the state) through Canada into Alaska. I've seen videos, and it's gorgeous scenery. But, with the laws being what they are, I need to get a passport.
Will 2020 be the year I go "way up north, north to Alaska" (as the Johnny Horton song said)? I don't know, but I do hope to get there sometime!

Stunning aerials taken from a helicopter flying over Kenai Fjords National Park (near Seward, Alaska). More at alaska.org

I would not purposely go somewhere cold. :-) We saw the northern lights one night across Lake Erie when we lived on the lake.

That’s why you go in June. Not only is it warmer, you get about 22 1/2 hours of daylight!

@FourWalls I like the daylight part. I am sick of it getting dark at 5 pm.

Fairbanks is one of the most fun cities I've ever been to! I loved the food, the people and the overall experience!

I saw Andrew Zimmern eating weird stuff in Alaska, so I’ll probably stick to Subway so I don’t get moose nose or whatever that was.

I would either drive or take the train. I like to see things, not to fly over them. The one time I saw the Grand Canyon it looked like a hole in the ground from as far up as I was!

My parents drove from here to Alaska via Canada. It was my father's dream trip.
