Imagine a fire burning literally for decades. It sounds like something out of an environmental disaster flick or horror thriller I know. However, since 1962, the town of Centralia, Pennsylvania has experienced exactly that. The fire burns beneath the town. As a result of the fire, the town has been largely abandoned. It has been ranked among the top 10 creepiest places in America. Image via Pixabay

@LindaOHio I couldn't believe what I was hearing @ 1st when I heard of it. I read that it could possibly still burn for at least another 250 years or something like that as well. Just crazy.

@jnrdutton It's the coal that keeps it burning.

I first heard of this town when I was in my teenage years while playing Silent Hill. I got so hooked into that game that I researched if the game was possibly inspired by a real town, and true enough it was. Centralia evokes both sadness and fear in me: sadness because my heart goes out for those families who were forced out of their homes. Imagine building your dream house with your family and having to leave it all behind, literally running out of there to save their lives. It makes me fear it because it is very possible that this could happen anywhere else. And all because of man's irreversible mistake. I have this insane desire to see it someday, although I know that I will not have the nerve to actually visit the place if given the chance. I am a scaredy-cat and I overthink things. I will always think of the worse and will ruin the trip for me. For now, I am content watching YouTube videos of the brave explorers who manage to film in Centralia.
