George and Gwen Kellerman live in Twin Oaks, Ohio, with their two children and a dog. George works in plastics and has a possible job promotion to Vice President of Sales at the New York Division. They board the plane headed for New York City. Gwen keeps asking if she can have something to eat or a cup of coffee. George insists that they wait because he's going to take her to the Four Seasons for the most special dinner ever. They run into heavy air traffic and heavy fog which keeps them circling over Kennedy International Airport. Finally they are rerouted to Boston's Logan Airport. Their luggage, however, has not arrived; and it contains George's ulcer medicine and Gwen's extra cash.
They just miss the train at South Station; so they chase it with a taxi. Once on board, it's very crowded; and there is a two-hour wait to get a seat in the dining car. By this time they are starving; and George's ulcer is acting up on an empty stomach. They finally get seated; and all they have left are peanut butter sandwiches, crackers, green olives and warm clam juice and tonic water. They arrive at Grand Central Terminal at 2 AM. Mass transit, taxicab drivers and sanitation workers are on strike...and it's raining. They must walk to the Waldorf Astoria. On the way Gwen is amazed at all of the piles of garbage.
The movie continues in this vein from this point forward; but if you want to see what happened, you will have to watch the movie. This is definitely better than the 1999 remake with Steve Martin and Goldie Hawn; but it's not a blockbuster. I've watched it a few times; but it's usually if there's nothing else on television. I give this movie my lukewarm recommendation. One point to make...it is rated G which is unusual; so all of the family can watch.
This movie is rated G.
