Just to make sure that no one loses their individual or collective lunches over the prospect of a month and a half worth of country songs I’m also counting down the days till Valentines Day with 45 rock songs that have the word “love” in the title. Here’s today’s “love” song.
(I Love It When You) Call Me Names - Joan Armatrading
Remember what I said yesterday about MTV? Here’s another example of what you could see on that channel “back then.”
I first heard of Dame Joan Armatrading in 1977, when her jazzy “Show Some Emotion” received FM rock airplay (those were the days). Then, in 1983, this song and “Drop the Pilot” received plenty of MTV coverage. That’s about it in the US, although she’s received enough popularity worldwide to be awarded an MBE in 2001.
And oh, this song. If Tom Lehrer was doing “The Masochism Tango” in the late 50s, this is what happened in the early 80s. It’s tongue in cheek, but it certainly wouldn’t pass muster in today’s PC world.
That’s okay. I love the song.

That’s okay. English is a difficult enough language without throwing the nuances of southern American on top!
