Overboard is a 1987 romantic comedy written by Leslie Dixon, directed by Garry Marshall (who plays Drummer in the movie) and produced by Roddy McDowall (who plays Andrew in the movie). CAST Goldie Hawn - Joanna Stayton/Annie Proffitt Kurt Russell - Dean Proffitt Edward Herrmann - Grant Stayton III Katherine Helmond - Edith Mintz Roddy McDowall - Andrew Michael G. Hagerty - Billy Pratt Brian Price - Travis Proffitt Jared Rushton - Charlie Proffitt Jamie Wild - Greg Proffitt Jeffrey Wiseman - Joey Proffitt Garry Marshall - Drummer Heiress Joanna Stayton and her husband, Grant Stayton III, are used to a wealthy lifestyle. They are in rural Elk Cove, Oregon, getting their yacht repaired when Joanna decides that she wants to remodel her closet. She hires Dean Proffitt, a local carpenter, to do the job. During the remodel Joanna is rude and condescending; but Dean does a really fine job. Joanna is having none of it. She insists that everyone knows that you make closets out of cedar; and Dean has made the closet out of oak. Dean agrees to remake the closet out of cedar if Joanna pays for the work he's already done. She refuses. They begin to argue, which ends with Joanna throwing Dean off the yacht. All of his tools follow suit. That night the yacht is repaired and it sails away. Joanna comes up on the deck to retrieve her wedding ring and falls overboard. The next day the local news carries a story that a woman was taken out of the water by a garbage scow. She is suffering from amnesia and is taken to the local hospital. No one knows who she is. Grant sees her picture on television and heads back to pick her up. When he arrives she is in the middle of a tirade with the hospital employees. When he sees how she's acting he denies having any knowledge of her and returns to the yacht to party with younger women. This movie was released with mixed reviews and did not do well at the box office; however, it has attained a cult following and has even been remade. In my opinion, the 80s provided us with a lot of good movies, especially comedies. It's definitely not an award-winner; but we have watched it a half-dozen times. It's a good go-to movie when there's nothing else on; and you want something light. I would recommend seeing it at least once. It's a bit of good fluff in a sea of even worse movies. This movie is rated PG-13. Photo Credit: Pixabay
