Myth is more durable than history, and far more entertaining The above quote is from a book I am reading by Lauren Willig called The English Wife. A tragedy has struck a wealthy New York family at the end of the 19th century. The male heir to the family dynasty is found murdered, the last word on his lips "George." His wife is yet to be found at all. The man's sister takes it upon herself to find out who this "George" is and whether the name has anything to do with her missing, presumed dead, sister in law. I like the above quote as it made me stop and think. What do you think, Is Myth far more durable than history?

Absolutely. People like the romance, mystery and unknown and not so much the truth of the past.

True. I've seen that in regards to ancestry too. Too many people who share the same ancestor have wanted to attribute said ancestor as a general in a war, or some manner of royalty.

Probably look how Greek Mythology has endured.

Ah, this is true. I think it is still being taught in schools today. More so than the other Mythologies.

It may be. Personally I like facts.

I like facts too, but I don't mind fiction either. I like learning history through fiction sometimes. That is, I'll read a book or watch a movie and then go looking for the truth in the fiction. Trying to find out what was the author or writer's creative license and what was the cold, hard truth.

There are so many myths; and they are definitely entertaining...like the Loch Ness Monster.

Ah yes. That one scared me a lot as a kid. Then there are more domestic style myths. Like the myth that a kid was sucked into the drain at the bottom of a pool. My sister got me with that one when we were growing up.
