"The Poseidon Adventure" is a disaster movie which was released in 1972. The movie was met with mostly positive reviews and won several awards including a BAFTA Award for Gene Hackman for Best Actor and a Golden Globe for Shelley Winters for Best Supporting Actress-Motion Picture. The budget was $4.7 million; and the box office receipts were $93.3 million. CAST Gene Hackman - Reverend Frank Scott Ernest Borgnine - Detective Lieutenant Mike Rogo Red Buttons - James Martin Carol Lynley - Nonnie Parry Roddy McDowall - Acres Stella Stevens - Linda Rogo Shelley Winters - Belle Rosen Jack Albertson - Manny Rosen Pamela Sue Martin - Susan Shelby Arthur O'Connell - Chaplain John Eric Shea - Robin Shelby Leslie Nielsen - Captain Harrison The passenger steamship S S Poseidon is slated for the scrap yard and is making its final trip from New York City to Athens. The company representative orders Captain Harrison to empty ballast and go full speed ahead. The Captain does not agree with these orders but complies. It's New Year's Eve; and everyone is gathered in the dining room. Captain Harrison is called to the bridge. There is an emergency report of an undersea earthquake near Crete; and there is a tsunami headed their way at 60 knots. Harrison sends a mayday; but it's too late. The ship is hit broadside, floods the bridge, kills Harrison and his crew; and the ship capsizes, killing or injuring most of the people on board. Reverend Scott tells the survivors that rescue is to be found up, toward the hull. Robin, who has spent a lot of time in the engine room asking questions, agrees. The steel plating near the aft propeller shaft is just one-inch thick. The Rogos, Susan, Robin, the Rosens, Nonnie and Martin go along with Scott. Acres, injured, is trapped at the galley door and waits for them. They use the large artificial Christmas tree as a ladder and climb up to the galley. After the group is safe, there is a series of explosions; and water begins to rush into the dining room. The people remaining rush to get up the tree; but there is too much weight; and the tree falls over. The Poseidon begins to sink. If you want to find out what happens next, you will have to watch the movie. This is not the best movie I've ever seen; but it's one that you will want to watch until the very end regardless! It's full of suspense as the group picks its way slowly through the ship. Will they make it to the aft propeller shaft? Watch it and see! I recommend this movie. The movie is rated PG. I saw this when it was new! A good movie. They made a crappy 2006 remake which I refused to see.
