I have just finished reading a book called `Nights at the circus' that was written by Angela Carter in 1984. I had not read any of this author`s work before , but after reading this book, I will look out for other titles by her.
Nights at the circus is a sort of fantasy story about a female trapeze artist who is half human and half bird. Her name is Sophie Fevvers and she was found, as a baby ,on a doorstep by a woman called Lizzie who named her and took her on as a foster daughter. Sophie became the talk of the town and mixed with some very famous people.
The story tells how a young American journalist fell in love with Sophie while he was looking for something exciting to print in the newspaper that he worked for. He followed her all over the world after joining the circus to be with her all the time.
