Just like the country half of this countdown to Valentines Day, the rock songs with “love” in the title have been all over the place. In the past four days I’ve gone from the late 80s (Fine Young Cannibals) to early 80s (Flock of Seagulls) to 70s rock (Golden Earring)....to here.
Two Divided By Love - Grass Roots
I don’t mean this to be insulting, but the Grass Roots were a little on the “light” rock side. They started as a folk-rock group with P.F. Sloan helping put them together. Of course, Sloan strayed from the “Eve of Destruction” protests himself, eventually writing things like “A Must to Avoid” for Herman’s Hermits and the classic “Secret Agent Man” by Johnny Rivers.
No, this wasn’t earth-shattering music. And it certainly wasn’t Bo Donaldson-like bubblegum that would annoying people later in the 70s. It was “just right,” which is why songs like this have such staying power.
This is one of the Grass Roots’ biggest hits, and one of my favorites.
Two Divided By Love
Written by Brian Porter, Dennis Lambert, and Marty Kupps
Recorded by the Grass Roots
From Move Along, 1971

Well, I know the group and I know the song; but I think the version I'm familiar with was sung by another group.
