Today is Cheese lovers Day.

I have just found out that today ,20th January, is national Cheese lovers Day. I had not known this until I had read something about it online. This is good news for me because I love any sort of cheese , apart from the really smelly sort, and I hope that the local supermarkets will take advantage of this day and have lots of lovely cheese on special offer today. Will you be celebrating Cheese lovers day, and what is your favourite sort of cheese?

For some people it is, I once knew somebody who always ate cheese sandwiches when he was at work. He did not eat meat , and his wife could not think of anything else to put in his sandwiches.

It doesn't tell me anywhere which nation celebrates today as 'Cheese Lover's Day' but I suspect that it's an American institution (most random 'National Days' are). It's a shame that most Americans have no idea what real cheese is, due to the actions of the FDA. They have something absolutely dreadful called Kraft cheese which comes in limp squares and can often be found in its half melted state on hamburgers and they have an abomination called "Cheddar" which never saw a gorge or a cave therein in its life (and probably isn't even made of real cow's milk). I believe that, if you go to a specialist store, you can find some more cheese-like products but they don't import much and there are only beginning to be proper cheese makers in that God-forsaken land! As for me, I love cheese. My favourites are Lincolnshire Poacher (a nutty and flavoursome hard cheese which one might mistake for a good mature cheddar), Cropwell Bishop Stilton (probably the best blue Stilton, lovely and creamy and complex, with the delicate fungal hint of old bathrooms and long disused cellars), a good ripe Brie (no particular maker here but the smaller and the more French, the better! It must also be properly ripe and almost running away from you). I also love the sharp and crumbly Caerphilly but it seems to be very hard to find in supermarkets these days.

You seem to know very much about cheese. I like the way you describe one as smelling of old bathrooms and damp cellars. I think the Kraft cheese is very similar to our dairylea cheese or maybe some sort of processed cheese that comes in thin rubbery squares. Were Kraft thinking about taking over one of our cheese making companies not long ago. I seem to remember reading something about it?

@lazydaizee They already sell some of their processed stuff in the UK and Dairylea is a Kraft product. They merged with Heinz in 2015 and are now one of the biggest international grocery companies. They also own Cadbury's, I was shocked to learn! The issue with their cheese products is mostly to do with the use of food dyes (including tartrazine) containing phthalates, which cause hormone disruption,

@owlwings I know I had read something about the takeover , but I did not realise it included Cadbury`s. No wonder their chocolate does not taste the same anymore.

Seriously strong I think they call it. If it burns the tongue... it's pretty much perfect!

I have never heard of cheese burning the tongue, but you can buy all sorts of different ones and I have only tried a handful of different flavours.
