1848 - The California Gold Rush begins when gold is found at Sutter's Mill.
1908 - The first Boy Scout troop is organized in England.
1943 - Sharon Tate was born. She was an American model and actress and was one of Hollywood's most promising newcomers. She was well known for her performance in Valley of the Dolls in 1967. On August 9, 1969 Tate and 4 others were brutally murdered by the Manson family in her home that she shared with her husband, Roman Polanski. She was 8-1/2 months pregnant and only 26 years old.
1974 - Ed Helms was born. He is an American actor, comedian and singer. He is best known for his role as Andy Bernard on The Office and the trilogy of Hangover movies.
