The movie had 8 award nominations and 2 wins, one of them was for Julia Roberts, a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress-Motion Picture.

The movie opens with Annelle Dupuy walking down the street toward Truvy Jones's home-based beauty salon. Annelle has recently graduated from beauty school. Since this is the wedding day of Truvy's good friend M'Lynn Eatenton's daughter, Shelby Eatenton, Truvy hires Annelle right away. Shelby is a Type 1 diabetic who is not supposed to have children. As the salon fills with people Annelle meets, in addition to Shelby and M'Lynn, Ouiser, a grouchy, rich, two-time widow with a big dog who looks on the negative side of life, and Clairee Belcher, a happy widow who enjoys taking shots at Ouiser whenever she can.
Ouiser starts to ask Annelle about her past; and Annelle admits that her husband recently left her while running from the police, taking all of their money and the car. Shelby feels sorry for her and invites her to the wedding where Annelle meets the bartender, Sammy DeSoto, begins dating him, and becomes one of the group...one of the Steel Magnolias that are soft on the outside and tough as nails on the inside to handle what life throws their way.
If you want to find out what happens, you will have to watch the movie. Did I like this movie? It was OK for me. One of the stand-outs in this movie was Dolly Parton. She's a natural actress; and the only one of the magnolias that didn't have to fake an accent.
This movie is rated PG.

I saw it at the cinema when it came out. I liked it very much then. I don“t know if I would like it as much now.
