Fog, they say? I’m up relatively early for me, and if it’s foggy outside I might as well stay in bed. I have my iPad, which means I can watch video or listen to music. And, speaking of music, it’s getting close to the start of my ten favorites with “love” in the title to get us to Valentines Day. But there are still a few songs before that part of the countdown left, and here’s one of them.
Love Is On a Roll - Don Williams
When a great Don Williams song doesn’t crack the top ten you know the list was hard to put into an order.
I’ve always loved this song, with its “sneak a little Jimmy Buffett-like music in” background music. That’s okay: this came out in the era when Alabama was impersonating the Eagles, and country music was starting that slow descent into the abyss it’s now in (if you didn’t see, earlier this week Loretta Lynn proclaimed that country music is dead).
That’s part of the magic of Don Williams: this doesn’t sound out of place with any of his music from his early days. He had a terrific voice that could sing love in one minute and heartache in the next.
His health took him off the road about a year before he died. Fortunately, they saw fit to put him in the Hall of Fame while he was alive to enjoy it.
Love Is On a Roll
Written by Roger Cook and John Prine
Recorded by Don Williams
From Yellow Moon, 1983

Honest truth: I didn’t know for decades that Prine co-wrote this.

In this case, I don't think I've heard of the artist either.
