Book Review: A Snow Country Christmas

I know, Christmas is over but it's still snowy where I am. A Snow Country Christmas is the last book in a series by Linda Lael Miller. The authors call them a "companion" issue. My daughter and I had read the first 3 novels so we wanted to read this one. The Carsons of Mustang Creek is the series name. There are 3 Carson brothers so each of the three books in the series are their love stories. Yes, these are contemporary romance. Contemporary romance are sweet romances without all the sizzle. ~~~ Raine McCall would take snow-covered mountains over a star-studded premiere any day. But when hotshot movie executive Mick Branson arranges dinner on Christmas Eve to discuss a work opportunity, she's intrigued by the offer - and the man. She's a no make-up, no-frills single mom who is happy with her quiet life. Sharing chili cheeseburgers and sizzling kisses with Mick is sure heating up her holiday, but country girl and power player don't mix... It's not just work that's brought Mick back to Mustang Creek. Since he first visited to oversee a documentary, free-spirited graphic designer Raine has been in his head. Her approach to life is as unconventional as her quirky holiday ornaments. Their attraction is undeniable - and so are their differences. Putting down roots in the Wild West wasn't in the script. But there are some Christmas gifts you can't walk away from, even when they turn your whole world upside down... ~~~ We have seen these two characters before as the father of Raine's daughter is one of the Carson brothers, Slater. And Mick Branson came to town to oversee a documentary Slater was producing. So that's where the first 3 books in the series would come in handy, but they aren't necessary. This book can stand alone, but not if you want to read the other books. Read them first because... spoilers. I have to say I was disappointed with this book. Most of the story took place over 3 or 4 days. There was no tension, no conflict, no lead-in to the relationship. It was just in your face, right there, right from the beginning. The only conflict is their different lifestyles but when you read the story that quickly becomes a non-issue. The story is 220 pages so it is not a novella, but it reads like one the way things happen so quickly in such a short amount of time. I am not normally a reader of contemporary romance, especially since the authors that write them DO write them in a series and if you want to read one you'll want to read the other... and the other, and the other, and the other. And I'm not going out and buying all those books when I have enough on my shelf to read. I like a good romance once in awhile but I also like other genres. Thrillers are very popular right now. I gave this book 3 stars.

That seems like a lot of stars for a book you were disappointed in and didn't sizzle off the page. You have nothing to recommend reading this one. I don't go in for contemporary romance though I am trying to write one. It's because I don't go in for them I'm having a hard time with it. For me, it would be a no-brainer not to read.

The Goodreads star system rates 3 stars as "I liked it", I believe. I can't go and look at them unless I'm doing a rating. 5 stars has to be a book that knocks me over. I may have given one book 5 stars. I pretty much like all books I read. One book that appeared to be translated or written in very poor English I gave one star. I'm pretty much a 4 star across the board when it comes to the books I read.

@just4him The Goodreads rating system still puts a positive explanation on 2 stars. I just can't remember them all. I think they consider 1 star as "it didn't wow me" or something like that.

@patgalca I've never looked at their star rating. My books are on Goodreads. One person gave me a 2 star for Scarred and I have no idea why. There wasn't a review. I was surprised when it's gotten 5 stars on Amazon. I think I know who gave me the two stars but I haven't asked her why. I'm chicken.

I find that I get attached to one of the couples and do not like to read about the other couples in a series. That is one of the reasons why I do not like a series of books. I've been wanting to read some Christmas themed books, as well as some valentines day themed books myself. There's nothing wrong with reading a book outside of the holiday. Remind me, do you have kindle unlimited?

I don't have a kindle and that is the problem with the Prince Edward Island Dreams series I read. I cannot read the "companion" Christmas story because from what I can tell it is only available on Kindle.

@patgalca If you have a smartphone you can get the app there, or you can get the app on windows I believe. There's even kindle for the browser.

@ScribbledAdNauseum I checked the app on my tablet (Samsung) and the book wasn't there. I can't read a book on my phone. My eyes are getting pretty bad.

I am one of those that like series books but the part I hate is having to hunt down all the rest of the books but I get all my books on amazon so it won’t be hard

I am sure I did a review on here but I read a Jeffrey Archer book only to have the ending be a cliffhanger and found the book was part of a series. I have yet to get the next book. This is why I don't particularly like series books. With romances it is different because it is usually the same location but different character love stories. The only spoilers is you know how the previous couples ended out if you didn't read the first stories... which honestly, really doesn't matter if you're just in it for the stand alone.

If you hover over the stars on Goodreads, 3 stars is "I liked it". I don't like to pan a book, and I don't think I did pan this one. I was just a little disappointed. I expected more.
