"This is Spinal Tap" is a mockumentary released in 1984. The screenplay and music were written by the great Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, Harry Shearer and Rob Reiner. The movie was directed by Rob Reiner. It received mostly positive reviews but had modest box office receipts -- $2 million budget vs. $4.7 million box office receipts. When the movie was released on VHS in 2002, however, it built up a cult following. There are quite a few cameo appearances in this movie. Most of the dialogue was improvised; and dozens of hours of film were recorded.

Harry Shearer - Derek Smalls

British heavy metal band, Spinal Tap (fictional), is being filmed for a "rockumentary" on their 1982 U. S. concert tour, "Tapping Into The Millennium", by Marty Di Bergi, a documentary filmmaker. Band members: David St. Hubbins and Nigel Tufnel on Vocals and Guitar, Derek Smalls on Bass, Viv Savage on Keyboard and Mick Shrimpton on Drums. When Di Bergi was asked why he picked Spinal Tap, he said he was attracted to their "unusual loudness".
The group is set to promote their new album, "Smell the Glove". Due to the questionable cover, the record company chose to release an all-black cover. Their first stop on the tour, Madison Square Garden, is a sell-out. De Bergi is now interviewing the group and is finding out what has gone on since the beginning when they were known as the Thamesmen. There have been changes in band members, especially drummers. Two died through strange circumstances...one because of a "bizarre gardening accident", and one due to "spontaneous human combustion". They changed from "flower power" music to heavy metal during the years that they have been performing.
Do you want to find out what happens next? Then you will have to watch the movie. There were some critics that absolutely gushed over this movie. I liked it but am more reserved in my recommendation. I thought it was funny but not hilariously funny. It's supposed to be a satire of a heavy metal rock band; and I think even more could have been done with it. Regardless, I do recommend it. You can draw your own conclusions and even leave a comment for me!
This movie is rated R.
