Writing Doesn't Have Emotion

When you write, a post or a text, you can inflect feeling into it. You can use exclamation points and bold lettering. I think that people forget that when you write, people can't judge the emotion behind the words. We can't determine if you're judging or making a joke. What we write can offend people without meaning to. We can explain after but even then, the damage is already done. I even explain a lot of what I say before I publish because I don't want to offend. I've been through this with friends and family both. The only difference is when it's written in a public forum, you can't look the person in the face that you offended or put on guard. You have to rely on your words being enough. I think that it would behoove us to try to watch the way we say things. Not that we should watch what we say like we're walking on eggshells around others. Consideration of others wouldn't be a bad thing.

I have explained something to someone who said something and when I responded with an explanation I receive a "I was just kidding. I should have added lol".

I've found it's easy to be misunderstood because of cultural differences.

You're so right. We aren't mind readers. How someone interprets a post might be affected by their mood at the moment, their culture, or other factors.

Not all writers or should I write "those that write text" see already there is ambiguity. Someone might interrupt "writers" to mean professionals. I'm not one. Now someone might think I'm being sarcastic or critical of others for writing that? Not. As I previously started writing, not all writers, write the same way. Many people plan their discourse before they type. Others do not. I write off the cuff, my fingers move before I know what is going to appear on the screen. If I blurt something in text which is taken not the way I intended it to be, I can't really help that. Asking me to "think" before I write doesn't work with me. It is not that I don't want to change. I can't. But thank you for the idea - of explaining more in our writings but then some get upset because it is too long? Writing doesn't have emotion is the title. But I thought with some writings that was the point. We write sometimes to express what we are feeling. I'm perplexed. Do still have lots to learn when it comes to writing. Your topic made me search for more...

Okay, I see your point. When you type, you have to hit enter or push a reply button before that writing goes up. Therefore as you don't have to think before you write, you can think before you send out into the world what you wrote. In a way writing does having emotion but it can have many emotions. It's like painting I think. The writer could want to convey an emotion but the reader can perceive it a different way. I think that when writing something as mundane as a post on here, a little thought to how what you write could be perceived couldn't hurt. Some things are not so mundane. I know that, when I write pieces of my book...when I get to write lol, that I try to find words to convey feeling so that when you read it, what I want you to feel when you read it is conveyed without misconception. Different types of writing I think have different rules.

@JordanLader Thank you. I do that as you discribed. It feels very much to me like editing time. I look for better communication things like grammar and spelling though don't spend too much time on trying to protect or filter. Don't feel I need a filter though would be interested in knowing if someone else thought so.

@mynameiskate When I'm talking, I don't have a filter. I feel like if you're my friend and know me as well as you say then you should expect what rolls off my tongue. When I write, it's for a bunch of people that don't know me or my inflections so I tend to try and find ways of conveying what I mean. What I mean as a joke, someone else may take seriously. I have been both misunderstood on my posts and been on the offended end in comments. In a way I feel like if you don't like what is written to just let it roll off your back but then I also feel that people could take care as well. I'm a very confusing person lol
