Hi everyone! A very good morning to all. It is one of my favorite evening snack and perhaps,my favorite dish indeed. It is a mix of meat, veggies and mayo. Yum! Do you like Shawarma? What is your favorite evening snack?

I seldom snack in the evening. What is Shawarma? I've never heard of it before.

It's roughly the same as doner kebab or the Greek gyro - a large cylinder of meat roasted vertically on a spit which turns so that the meat is evenly cooked. Thin slices are cut from the outside as it cooks.

It's one of those foods that I ask my wife to buy for me when she is in the mall doing grocery.

Shawarma is what we know as doner kebab or gyro. It is a large cone of meat (usually lamb here but it can be chicken or beef or pork) made of seasoned and marinated slices of raw meat on a large skewer mounted vertically and turning in front of a hot gas or charcoal burner. As the outside of the meat is cooked, slices are taken from it and served with salad and sauces, often enclosed in a pitta bread. The word 'shawarma' comes from a Turkish word meaning 'turning' and the Greek 'gyro' means the same (think of a gyroscope). 'Doner' also comes from a Turkish word meaning 'to turn' and 'kebab' simply means 'roast', though it's usually used in English to mean something roasted or barbecued on a skewer or spit. I am quite fond of doner kebab and we have a van which visits the village where I live every day and sells doner kebab, burgers, chips and other things. I don't have it very often, though.
