Communication Is So Much More Than Talking

I read a post by @JordanLader earlier today. It was about written communication.
That post prompted my memories of some interesting information I learned about twenty years ago.
I attended a seminar about teaching/counseling students. The speaker said that 70% of conversation is non-verbal communication. Things like tone of voice, facial expressions and body language reveal as much as words do.
I think many people know and understand that now, but I was surprised when I first learned it. Seventy percent? I don't know how they arrived at that number, but it seems high to me. I believe it though, because there are certainly many aspects to communication.
There can be a lot of room for misunderstanding in written conversation or voice only. I think face-to-face is best for full communication, if possible.
What do you think of the 70% statistic? Have you had any interesting experiences regarding non-verbal cues in conversation?

Oh, this is so true and there are examples all over websites. There is no way to gauge tone. So think of all the different tones you can use the word "Really?" It could mean 100 different things (well that number might be high)
Know what I mean?
