"Unfaithfully Yours" is a romantic comedy that was released in 1984. The screenplay was written by Valerie Curtin, Barry Levinson and Robert Klane and was based on Preston Sturges' screenplay for the 1948 movie by the same name. The role of Claude Eastman was originally planned for Peter Sellers; but he passed away in 1980. Reviews for the movie were lukewarm; and the commercial success was minor with box office receipts of $19.9 million against a budget of $12 million.
CAST
Dudley Moore - Claude Eastman
Nastassja Kinski - Daniella Eastman
Armand Assante - Maxmillian Stein
Albert Brooks - Norman Robbins

Richard B. Shull - Jess Keller
Claude Eastman is a composer and conductor. He has married Daniella, a woman half his age and of Italian descent. He goes away on a trip and tells his Italian driver, Giuseppe to tell his friend, Norman, to keep an eye on Daniella. The message gets lost in translation; and Giuseppe tells Norman to hire a private eye to keep tabs on Daniella. When Claude gets home, Norman has a report for him. Claude acts if he doesn't care and throws it in a trash bin on the street. As soon as Norman is out of sight he digs it out of the trash and takes it home. He has it in his hands when Daniella walks in; so he throws it in his wastebasket. In the meantime Giuseppe comes and empties the trash. When Daniella leaves, Claude runs into the kitchen and asks Giuseppe where he put the trash. "In the squeeza machine". The trash compactor. Claude retrieves the report but cannot read it.
Claude goes to the private eye's office and is told that he also has a video. Claude says to destroy it. The private eye sets up another chair, puts the video in the machine and waits for Claude to come back...which he does. The video partially obscures the person that is coming out of Claude's apartment; but he can see that the man wears argyle socks. Claude is sitting at auditions at the concert hall when Maxmillian comes in. Claude sees that he has on argyle socks. Maxmillian says that he has a matinee (a tryst); and Claude knows that Daniella is at home having "the sleep of the innocent" (a nap). He is sure that they are going to meet.
If you want to see how this movie turns out, you will have to watch it. First of all, let me say that I totally disagree with the critics. This movie is so funny. It's one of my favorites; and I've seen it at least a half-dozen times. When Claude tries to execute his plan, it doesn't go as he expects it to. It's hilarious. I give this movie my 100% recommendation. Let me know what you think. If you disagree...or if you agree...leave me a comment. Thank you.
This movie is rated PG.
