Social media is something most of us are connected to in one way or another. We have Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and now Nextdoor is becoming popular among many of our neighboring communities. Each App and website comes with their own individual safety issues, which has us ask "Is Nextdoor really safe?"
What is Nextdoor?
Nextdoor is an app and website available for neighbors to chat and discuss the happenings of the neighboorhood and Although most of the posts on Nextdoor are neighbors posting about missing pets, there are still features that can make Nextdoor pretty unsafe to use. One of these features is to make your profile public.
If you don't realize your profile is public, this can turn into a pretty dangerous situation, as a public profile also allows other members to see your address. This was something I did not know about until way later into the game and I am so glad I found this out early enough.
Imagine getting into an argument with someone in the neighborhood, but not actually knowing that person in real life and they show up at your door. Another scary thing is that it's not that hard to "Fake" a location these days, so just about anyone can find you. All they have to do is search for you and if your profile is public, they will have access to your address.
Internet safety these days is very important. Especially with all the horror stories out there. If Nextdoor is an app you wish to use, make sure you have your profile as private. You never know who could show up unexpectedly.
More recently with Nextdoor, I had a scary experience where some random neighbor started responding to my comments.
The first time he did this, it was in response to a comment I left on someone's post. My comments weren't mean. The person was looking for advice as their apartment complex kept shutting the water off with no notice.
My comment mentioned a time that this happened to me, but the apartment complex ended up sending out a notice later saying they had facilities available to those who needed to shower. The response "You live at home with mommy and daddy!" Okay? So what, I had to move back home after I fell on hard times and I haven't moved out, because right now, it's what works for all of us. And how did this person know I lived at home?
My last encounter with this dude involved him correctly identifying my street number and saying he wanted an autograph of my book. I know this is more than likely some ex or ex-friend messing with me, but it is still scary.
Have you used Nextdoor? Do you feel like it is safe?

Thanks for your post. So basically it's like other social media websites that has some navigations on it through mapping your neighbors and you can chat them? It seems like a Tinder type of an app but for neighbors lol. Well, anything can be a dangerous once it is used for the wrong purpose but so far there is existing applications that you can connect to your neighbor all you gotta do is asked your name what's their Facebook account and add them.
