The year is 1985 and Robbie Hart is a man who always had dreamed of being a rock star; but now he is an entertaining and nice wedding singer from Ridgefield, New Jersey. He's engaged to his girlfriend, Linda, who fell in love with him when he still had dreams of becoming a rock star.
At Robbie's latest wedding gig, he saves the wedding toast from being ruined by an alcoholic brother (Steve Buscemi). Because of this, he catches the eye of a new waitress, Julia; and when they talk later, she tells him that she wants him to sing at her wedding; and he agrees. They both mention that they are engaged.
Robbie and Linda's wedding day arrives; but Linda does not. Later Linda stops by to tell Robbie that since he no longer has aspirations of being a rock star, she doesn't want to be stuck in Ridgefield and end up living in his sister's basement. Robbie is devastated; and it affects his singing. He becomes rude and crass and ends up getting beaten up by a bride's father and the attendees.
Julia tries to cheer him up and asks him to help her with her wedding planning. He eventually agrees; and they become fast friends. Robbie realizes, as he gets to know Julia, just how shallow Linda was.
If you want to find out what happens next, you'll have to watch the movie. It's another match-up of Sandler and Barrymore. They always seem to have a good on-screen chemistry. The movie is funny and light. Something I've watched more than once. I think it's worth watching at least once.
