Aretha Franklin was born on March 25, 1942 and was an American singer, songwriter, pianist and civil rights activist. She began singing gospel as a child in the church choir. She finally achieved success when she signed with Atlantic Records in 1966. Songs like "Respect" and "Chain of Fools" propelled her into stardom. She became known as "The Queen of Soul".
