Aretha Franklin was born on March 25, 1942 and was an American singer, songwriter, pianist and civil rights activist. She began singing gospel as a child in the church choir. She finally achieved success when she signed with Atlantic Records in 1966. Songs like "Respect" and "Chain of Fools" propelled her into stardom. She became known as "The Queen of Soul". In 1987 she became the first female artist to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. She sold more than 75 million records worldwide.

I saw the tribute they did to Carole King at the Kennedy Center Honors a few years ago. ‘Retha had Carole in tears when she sang “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman.” It was a joyous thing to see.
