The burning question throughout this movie is: "Can men and women ever just be friends?"
1977 - Harry Burns and Sally Albright meet for the first time. They have graduated from the University of Chicago and are sharing the drive to New York City. On the way they discuss, "Can men and women ever just be friends?" They decide that sex gets in the way and part company.
1982 - Harry and Sally run into each other on a plane flight. Sally is in a relationship with Harry's neighbor, Joe; and Harry is about to marry Helen. Harry discusses why men and women can't be friends even if they're in relationships with other people; and they part ways after the flight.
1987 - Sally tells her friends Marie and Alice that she and Joe have broken up because she wanted a family and he didn't want to get married; Harry tells his friend Jess that Helen has left him for another man. Harry and Sally meet again in a book store and decide to have dinner together. Harry is surprised to find out that he has a woman friend. They begin to hang out together. They have late-night phone conversations, go to museums, go to dinner and discuss their love lives.
This is such a great movie. Billy Crystal keeps the pace moving along; and Meg Ryan plays his straight man. There are plenty of quotes and one-liners to talk about when you're discussing this film. This is a definite "yes" for me.
This movie is rated R.
