Another day, another request for Captain Obvious. Yes, as I finish this countdown of favorite songs with blue eyes reference in the title, there are no surprises to be found. So, for your dining and dancing pleasure, here’s an old favorite...to nobody’s surprise.
#2: Pale Blue Eyes - R.E.M.
And why am I using the R.E.M. cover instead of the Velvet Underground original? Simple....ever taken a peek at Michael Stipe’s eyes?
Lou Reed wrote this about a married woman he was in love with (mentioned in one of the two verses omitted from the R.E.M. version). And, as I say when I mention this or one of the two other Velvet Underground songs that R.E.M. covered in the 80s, we really missed a treat by them not doing an entire album of Reed songs.
But we will enjoy what we have. And I really enjoy this one.
Pale Blue Eyes
Written by Lou Reed
Recorded by R.E.M.
Released as the B-side of “Driver 8,” 1984
Also on Dead Letter Office, 1987
(Originally recorded by the Velvet Underground, 1969)

Sorry girl, but Stipe is gay. A mellow departure from the usual R.E.M. social commentary. Look at Stipe's hair!

So? I could admire Elizabeth Taylor’s gorgeous violet eyes without being interested in the rest of her!

I've heard of R.E.M. but don't recognize the song.
