Teach your children well.

I sent my daughters to convent school. That means, the necessary catechetical instruction would be a given, as part of the curriculum. Then one time in the past, my elder daughter and I were talking about doxology and the Memorare, and she asked why I never taught her the prayer. I was taken aback, because I pray the Memorare silently, when I am in desperation. She said it was never brought up in any of her religion classes. At another time in the past, too, my younger daughter, after one Sunday Mass, queried for a further explanation of the homily. Why, I asked with eyes wide open, that was the Gospel story explained already lengthily. Then she quipped quickly, 'After my med school, I will enroll in Theology.' Sigh. Lately, I've been hearing young people complaining why they were never taught the faith such as the History of the Church, the origin of the Apostles' Creed, the crises of the church, the Confessions of Augustine, the Summa Theologica of Thomas Aquinas, the story of Guadalupe, the apparition at Lourdes, and Fatima. I feel distressed. I was a teacher. It now appears that I did not teach the children well enough. Sigh. I should have taught them well.

This is a very noble concept and more importantly I came to know about the term ''Doxology'' from this discussion which I have never heard of before. The word itself has a profound meaning regarding the religion and praising of God.

Yes, we must continue studying about religion. The basic foundation is usually simplified. We know the prayers, the holy days of obligation, etcetera. Children take every thing we tell them hook, line and sinker. It's a different story when they grow up. What about the Triune God, the magisterium of the church, the dogma? Life means knowing our Creator more and more. The goal of our lives must be getting back to Him. I was glad with your response. Thank you.

@eileenleyva I'm even more glad to have read this comment of yours. Especially this particular line of yours has really impressed me to the core ''Life means knowing our Creator more and more. The goal of our lives must be getting back to Him.'' I would definitely search for documentaries in Curiositystream which has the best of collections regarding past history. Thanks!

You said you are a teacher and yet you have neglected the most important subject in your faith.

My daughters never missed a Sunday Mass since they were born, except for the time when the younger contracted dengue. We say the Rosary every day, and the Angelus. Come Saturdays and the whole of the Lenten season, it's Bible stories - from beginning to end. It's the higher Theology they were asking - like why there were heretical crises such as Arianism and Protestantism. The Book of Revelation was a difficult subject, because then, I couldn't explain yet the four horsemen. Now, the horsemen are all over us. I admit, when they were in college, I was exhausted, as I had other tutees on my wing. Sigh. Guilty.

I think there are many in Church's history that are never taught anymore since they are overlapped by many things already. Honestly, some of the topics you posted above are also foreign to me as well.

I was Dominican. Theology was required first two years of college. Am very grateful for the teachings about the Church We Love. We must reinforce the knowledge to the young, especially our children. Else, we could be guilty of omission. Never late yet. We begin now.

You are so right. We have to teach so much more to our children. As a parent we have to expose them to so many things to enlighten them.

The daily conversations could be helpful. We must always encourage them to learn a bit more about the faith.

@eileenleyva Yes. I agree. Some things are to be taught through living on a day to day basis.
