One of my closest friends asked me what do I prefer when it comes to buying a camera. I answered him that someone told me that when it comes to the camera, Sony is the best but it still depends on the specs of the cam.
What about you? When it comes to buying a camera, what do you prefer?

@mnglsp I really cannot say because it is only Canon in my experience. But with the brands that you mentioned, I would go for either Canon or Sony. Both have good resolution in pictures and HD video.

I like Nikon the most and I also have a Nikon DSLR. I won't consider Canon since long time ago I had a Canon camera but I don't think its quality is good enough. As to Sony, I think its price is usually very expensive and it gives me an impression of fancy features rather than practical ones.

It really depends a lot on what kind of camera you want, what you want to do with it and how much you want to pay.
Canon and Nikon (and Olympus) have a long tradition of making good cameras. Manufacturers like Sony and Panasonic are relatively new to the business and have fingers in many other pies. That doesn't mean that they are bad or unreliable, of course: they have obviously bought in the expertise and knowledge but I'd trust them just a little less to know what camera users want and what makes a good camera.

I once had a Canon camera but had to set it aside after several years because production of its battery has been phased out. On Christmas day in 2014, my daughters surprised me with a Nikon Coolpix LS 830 and I still use it aside from my iPhone 11 Pro. What I like about this camera is that it uses AA batteries which are readily available but I use the rechargeable batteries that are also AA. BTW, I’ve taken shots of the moon with its craters visible using this camera and I’ve even posted some of the photos in my discussions here. Just sharing this to give you an idea of how this Nikon camera performs.
