A step back in time

I walk outside, my shoes untied and loose on my feet. I am hoping that he won't notice, because I'm embarrassed that I don't know how to tie my shoes. I'm stubborn though, and won't admit that I need help. He has my bicycle out and is taking off the training wheels. I'm terrified because this will be my first attempt at going without them. He helps me onto the bike, keeping it and me steady. We're in the grass, but he keeps one hand on my back and the other on the handle bars. We steer out and into the road, waiting a few minutes before he silently takes his hands off the bike. I pedal for several minutes before I realize I'm doing it on my own. I smile and whoop, feeling triumphant. He's rearranging my room for me, moving everything out of the way and moving the dresser from one wall to the other, the bed going against the window. He's taking me trick or treating, but I get too scared and shy and end up going home before I collect much candy. Some days, I just miss my big brother...

It is okay. A lot of years have passed, and so his birthday isn't so hard for me anymore. I just remember the good things.

At first I thought it was going to be a boyfriend, then your dad!

I certainly hope I didn't have a boyfriend at 10 years old!

Sounds like big brother took care of little sister . . . what sweet memories! I read in another comment that he passed away years ago - so sorry to hear that.
