Working from home + homeschooling

I’ve been working from home as an independent contractor for 15 years already. I went through that easy-going married life without kids, to getting pregnant and having babies, to raising toddlers and sending kids to school while chasing deadlines and delivering the goods to my editors and publishers. And in most of those years, we did not have a regular housekeeper or a stay-in nanny to assist. Now I’m entering another phase as a work-at-home mom: writing from home and homeschooling my girls. It may seem daunting at first, but I actually have a few things to be thankful for: • I’ve got my laptop and Internet working properly. My netbook is some years old now and may need to retire later this year, but it works and it makes me write articles that get sold in the marketplace. • My girls are a bit grown now and they understand fully well that Mommy needs that writing time. They hardly ever bother me when they see me pecking on the keyboard furiously. Through the years, they’ve learned to entertain themselves and get creative on their own while I’m working. • There’s always that course syllabus. Since my daughters’ school suspended online learning for the 3rd term, I thought to just guide them through their textbooks and course outlines. We study MWF because those are days when they are not allowed gadgets and must focus on study, play, chores, art and music. So far, I haven’t got complaints. LOL. They’re used to alternative homeschooling during summer breaks, so I guess I don’t need to work so hard on positive reinforcement. Everything seems okay. I just miss my usual Saturday mornings at a coffee shop making article drafts and notes while my second daughter is having piano lessons at a music studio one floor above.

@almostoveryou In the beginning it must have been very hard juggling all those things. Now, it seems easier and so glad your daughters understand more now. So it sounds like they have experience in Homeschooling. It is very hard right now and we have to make adjustments. I hope after all this is over you can go back to your coffee shop routine.

@almostoveryou I can imagine how they must feel at times and wish they could be in school again.

There are days when they're too lazy to study and I can understand that. It can be quite challenging to self-direct for over 2 months of no regular school. Classes are likely to resume later than September.

It's nice that things are going alright for you. I'm glad that you're still able to work and your girls understand.

@almostoveryou It's good that you can be home with them. Things aren't so bad as they are in other places.

Thank you. My work productivity may not be as high as before, but I'm grateful to be home with the family. How are things over at Quebec?

Nice to know this. Curious as to where you get the online course syllabus, care to share?

I downloaded the course syllabus from the school's Learning Management System (LMS). Their teachers post course outlines and other learning guides from time to time.

that is nice. It is always good to make them understand. I hope I will get to that phase. Mine is a bit difficult at times to handle

It can be quite challenging if the child is not used to this setup. Explanations can help and perhaps a gradual transition.

@almostoveryou It isa bit difficult for my son since I need to give him a routine. A new routine can be tiresome and might cause tantrums and sometimes meltdown so I need to really have a gradual transition

Thank you. It is a busy life. For some reason I find myself more preoccupied now that we're all home. I used to have so much downtime when the kids were in school.

We try our best to be law-abiding citizens. We have CCTV cameras here that monitor residents. My husband goes out once a week to get provisions. I haven't been out for 2 weeks now.

@almostoveryou That is good. Less time outside the less chances of getting the virus.
