Government Officials Donate Their Salaries

Most of the cabinet members of the Philippines pledged 75% of their salaries to help combat the Covid-19. The President then through this spokesperson that he will donate one full month of this salary. Following this example, some Senators and other government officials followed. Our own city mayor donated his one month salary to help finance those who are greatly affected by the quarantine. Some private companies are also doing their share to help especially the frontliners. During this crisis, we need as many 'Good Samaritans' we can get. Stay safe and have a blessed Holy Week.

This is a wonderful gift to people left with little income.

True... the fact is, there are lots of Filipinos who are earning on a day-to-day basis. With the quarantine, these people lost their means of income. They are the ones who need financial assistance the most.

Mere publicity stunt to deflect the attention of the people from this government's ineptitude in handling this crisis.

Agree, agree, agree! Unless we see those salaries really put into good use, what's the use in declaring that you are giving that up. And besides, we need a concrete plan of how this country survives and not just promises of having money when there's actually none.

@toniganzon true. How the money is being spent should be shown. This government should show accountability for their actions not excuses.

Publicity or not, in our city here, the barangay that's put on lockdown because of the two positives in their community have received their assistance already. The poor families received at least a half-sack of rice.

They should do it with their free will. And this will also test them if they will be trustworthy in the next term of serving the public. Come this next election, this will decide if they will be able to keep their positions. Actions speaks louder than words recently. And this pandemic is definitely an eye opener. So they really need to help out

I hope all of those get put into good use. They might just be saying that but not doing.

@jvincent_129 it is unavoidable though... there will always be a Judas in every organization.

One thing I hope and pray is... that the local officials especially those who will be assigned on the distribution would not play politics or favoritism... or worse, take a cut from the financial assistance, which was usually done for many decades...

Indeed! I hope most of the Filipinos are thinking on the same thing. We should stop arguments for now and think only on ways to help each other.

@summerscent Not the crisis! Just the economy. :D... during this time, if everyone will depend only on the government, the economy will fold! We have to do our part no matter how little

In this situation, yes it is. The cabinet member's action actually triggered a domino effect down to the local government units. Maybe it was not necessary to publicize their actions, but an example must be set... Besides, it's a "damn if you do, and damn if you don't world" in our political arena here.

I can also donate money but I don't need to announce. How much is their salary, how many people can that feed for 1 month?
• Roxas, Philippines
9 Apr 20
One month salary worth 100K could already feed at least 20 families for a month... at least here in the provinces...

@jrlcentral so 10 of them can feed 200 families in 1 month.

@Alexandoy That's how I see it. But if those families starts to find an alternative source of living, or know how make use of what they have, they could extend that a bit further. For example, growing edibles in their properties (like what you are doing and something that I want to start), they could save a bit and have some fresh veggies readily available.
