Do cats forget us?

I have a missing cat. He lived in my yard for 2 years. He stayed only here. On February he disappeared. I searched for him. I posted on Facebook about him. Today I finally found him. I called his name. He meowed, but he ran when he saw me. He is really wild. Here I could catch him and even pet him. But now I can't even touch him. I was sad. I missed him and he is so ungrateful. I think it's impossible to catch him.
Cats disappoint me. No one can touch him. I was the only one who petted him when he was in my yard. He purred when I touched him. Now he is truly feral. I can't even touch him.

It is unfortunate. Perhaps if you invite him with food and take your time he will come back. Cats have amazing memories of people who treat them kindly.

So sad when they become feral I am sorry. Is this the cat in the photo? He is a cutie.

I am so glad you found him. I am not surprised that he ran away. I do not think it is ungrateful. Like you said he disappeared. You do not know what happened to him. Maybe he was hurt by someone and so he is afraid of all humans, even you. I say give him time and maybe he will come back to your yard again and let you pet him.

I am not sure and can not say anything with certainty. But I have heard that dogs stay faithful to their masters forever in all circumstances while cats are more attached to the surroundings and food. They can turn hostile to their masters in case of lack of food or other reasons. So it is not being ungrateful. It is their innate nature. And I might be wrong, But this is what I have heard over years though not from any authentic source.
