The end of an era

A few days ago my great great aunt passed away. She is a woman I never knew, so please do not extend any condolences. Her father was my great great great grandfather, a man I also never knew.
From the way I understand it, she lived in the home that her father had built many years ago. The house is on a prime piece of real estate, one that will now be developed into condominiums. It hurts my heart to think that such a piece of history will be ravaged by man's greed, and none more greedy than my great great aunt's son.
This man - one I've also never met - cares not for the history. He brokered a deal with the real estate group interested in his mother's land, and now that she is gone, he will reap the benefits of said deal.
I'd like to wallop him one, especially as I understand that he is none too kind. A family legacy ends, a part of his own legacy, and yet he cares not.

The history behind our property is what makes us love it the most. It’s sad when family land and homes are sold.

Yes it is. It's not just the home we inhabt, but what we do on the land. It hurts just as much when tree that held a tire swing has to be cut down.

It is, unfortunately.
I don't know exactly how old the house is, but I'd say atleast 1920's.

I have a similar story in my family. My dad grew up in a house that was passed down from his dad's family (not sure how far, but it was a pretty old house) . . . on farmland in Japan. When my grandmother passed away a few years ago, my uncle (oldest son) said he was going to take everything - and wanted to sell the land as well. My dad lives here - and not that he wanted anything, but he was super mad that my uncle became so selfish and greedy (there's this whole tangled story behind it). Anyway, that old house was apparently bulldozed to the ground

@ScribbledAdNauseum Nope
. And the weird thing is, my other uncle who lives here too was never told. So he talked to my dad one day and said they were going to go to Japan and they were going to stay at my grandmother's house . . . but my dad had to break the news to him that there was no house to go back to

Oh that's horrible! Did your dad atleast get to go home to see it one last time before it was gone?

He is not alone in his lack for regard for family history just go to any antique store and look at all the old photos.

Those make my heart hurt too. I've seen them hidden among postcards, stuck in an old shoe box with a sticker that listed their prices. Memories should be priceless.

@BelleStarr Yes, I know. We have photos here of people we don't know, but we know that they came before us, and are the reason we stand here today.. We cherish them.

Thank you. We had hoped to buy it but those hopes were dashed a few years ago when we found out what the man had done.

They truly, truly can. It's why I always think that families is always what you make it. Doesn't have to all be blood.
