I came across the above advertisement in the Orangburg News and Times from November 27,1875 and to be honest it intrigues me. To my modern eye, well I have a few questions. What was the use in selling a teacher's pay certificate? Did this mean that a person could present it to the relevant organization and get paid? I just don't know! Did you know... that the first school in America was built in 1635 and was ran my Boston Puritans? According to Education in the 1800s by Josie Brady it is. Anyway.. I thought this, and the link I am about to share, was interesting..

They've changed a lot, I am sure. The first schools were just a room, and especially in rural areas, if a child was needed more on the farm, that is where they would be. The ages weren't divided up, and there was just one teacher to teach them everything. A teacher was only paid $15.00 a month. I do not think that was a lot of money, even the.

@ScribbledAdNauseum I'm sure that must have been some good money at that time.

@amitkokiladitya I don't think so. $15.00 per month? I guess if they lived in a home rent free it would be, but if they had to pay rent, well i think renting a room could be as much as $10.00 a week.

So curious though, isn't it? I'll admit when I first read this I thought they were referring to teacher certification, and not pay. I had to edit the discussion!

that is interesting, i suspect they were (my guess) pay certificates that were traded by a teacher for goods.

That's the best guess I'd heard yet. I'm not sure why the person selling them wouldn't just cash them in somehow, but maybe that's not how it worked. I'd read that teachers earned about $15 monthly, so...
