Do we really need to memorize the Periodic Table of Elements?

Honestly I don't find any sense of memorizing the periodic table of elements but I think we should only be familiar with the elements rather than memorizing. Because in the end for me it doesn't make sense unless if you want to be a chemist or scientist. I hate memorizing that won't make sense in real life situation. Even the multiplication I really hate it when in fact we can use calculator but if not we can still count manually. Because at times in memorizing you would forgot the accurate information. Why do we have to memorize the Periodic Table of Elements? Why not use the hardcopy as reference on how to solve the formula?

Memorizing the multiplication table can be useful for everyday life. But the table of elements, there's really no point unless you end up being a chemist.

Similar to when they asked you to memorize the multiplication table from 1x1 to 12x12. I did not see the need then in grade school, except just to not look stupid in front of the class. But several years later, being able to know whichXwhich helped a lot not only in school but in day to day interactions. It also has indirect effects, like being a brain exercise, and the ability to apply the same concept to similar situations.

Not everyone was asked to memorize the periodic table. But I'm one of the lucky ones whose Chemistry teacher required us to memorize all the elements have it recited and fill out a blank periodic table of elements. To be honest, I don't find it relevant in my daily life which is the opposite of memorizing the multiplication table. I never regretted memorizing the multiplication table, many, many years later, to this date, they are so embedded in my long term memory, that I don't even have to think, they are just there ready to be used when I need them.

In our country we are not allowed to take a hardcopy to exam center. We memorized the whole table well using a trick ..funny tongue twister in our native language. It was fun and easy and my husband told the same trick to my my daughter who is thorough with it. I hope you have a similar trick there.

Why should you? because you don't want to look like a silly person if you haven't and they don't provide a hard copy in the exam. They want you to be able to recall what you know not read it off a piece of paper and put it on another piece of paper. Besides, it impresses people if you can recite the entire periodic table off the top of your head... I should know I do it and people are always amazed.
