Keeping myself accountable?

About a month ago I talked about the few things I did around the house to organize. At that time, a friend of mine was furloughed and was doing the same / similar to me. She and I kept each other accountable. I also felt accountable because I was telling everyone here about it. I think it is something I should do again. Now, let me preface this by saying that there will be no before and after photos. Mainly because I'm lazy. My "To Do" list Clean the two bottom shelves of one of my bookcases. There are things there that don't need to be kept Clean out the drawers of the desk of things that will never be used. Go through the laundry basket full of stuff that I never wear / other random things that just got put there "to go through later." This is a major one because it's been put off for years Clean under the bathroom sink again and get rid of things that aren't used / organize what is there. Go through the drawers of the vanity for the same reason. Eventually, but not necessarily a part of this list.. Clean the closet out of things that I will never use / wear. If able, move other dresser to closet. This will have to happen after I get a mount for my television / get a new television. Go through box of hangers and throw away / donate what won't be used. So yeah, there's a lot of things I need to be doing. How do you keep yourself accountable? Have you been doing extra stuff that you've been putting off?

I have gone through a few things, so a few spots are a bit better organized. Have not managed to get rid of much.

That is the hardest part, isn't it? Getting rid of everything. When I first moved back here, I slept in the den because wasn't quite ready to sleep in my brother's old room. It took a long time for me to start getting rid of his thing, and even to this day there are still a handful of things that I need to get rid of. Actually, the things on the bottom shelf are his.

@ScribbledAdNauseum I did move quite a bit, over my life time, so some purging each time. When I first moved in with my Hubby, we had to rent a storage unit. It took a couple years and finding FLYlady to get rid of enough to let go of that storage unit. Then I managed to regularly, methodically go through every shelf, drawer and box and get rid of things. Then we moved again and I really purged. But, that was 10 years ago And It seems there is much too much again.

@paigea It is really too easy to convince ourselves that we need to keep things. "Oh well this person might want it" or "I might be able to use it." are things I too often say to myself. I do not have a lot of clothes, but I still somehow have more than I ever use. Do you have that problem too?

You have a lot to keep you busy. I can't do too much; so it gets frustrating when I see something I'd like to do and can't.

There are some things here that I am unable to do as well. I try to do what I can, and let that be enough. Like today, I got offline a little while ago and started the process of getting rid of some of the stuff. It will have to be slow going for several reasons, not the least of which is that I have to hide what I am doing from the hoarder of the house. It's not his stuff, but he'll keep it if given half the chance.

@LindaOHio It's a hard habit to break, I know. I am somewhat of a hoarder myself, but I don't want to be. I'll limit myself to hoarding books and blankets, both practical things, don't you agree?

I don't and that is the problem. I have been thinking about doing an accountability journal. Maybe I should post my stuff on mylot too, because it is kind of like a to do listed in black and white. I am pretty good at setting goals in my head and accomplishing them..but I think I need to say set 3 goals per day and make sure I do them. I guess today's main goal would be to set up the lamp, also update my resume, and something else cleaning related, not sure yet about it. As I will be out today..maybe take some boxes to the recyling.

@snowy22315 We're supposed to have heavier rains tomorrow. Reason why I went to the store today instead.

Yes, I have a hard time keeping myself accountable unless I tell someone else, and then I have to do it. So I tell you guys, but I take pictures of what I've done for my friends. I haven't done anything in a few days, but only because I don't want to get things ready for the trash and then have it sitting around inside. Your plan sounds like a good one. Is it raining up your way?

I think clothes organizing is the thing I put off the most. Of course, well you know how this state is. I always keep a mix of all seasons together.

Well that's quite a list and ambitious. But I've started a similar mission and have done a few things and do feel good about all the unnecessary things I have gotten rid of. Lots more to go though. haha!

@MarymargII Yes. I have not actually done much at all the past couple of days. I do not want to fill the trash can up, so I am waiting until the trash is picked up before I start again. There are some things I will have to wait until the goodwill starts to open again.

It's all about chiseling away at it though, isn't it? Every little bit helps towards the end goal.

@ScribbledAdNauseum True and every little bit helps to make you feel relieved you are getting through it even if its slowly.

I am sure that being accountable helps when it comes to things like this, and everytime you knock even part of one of these things off the list it will have been worth doing. Here is a little acronym that I found that I found useful 'DUST-ed as in Donated, Used, Sold, or Thrown away So I might go and DUST a bit myself now.

That is a great acronym! I'll have to remember that and try to implement it every few months I think. I did do a bit yesterday, but not as much as I would have liked. Our trash bin was full so I could only manage one bag, but the trash has been picked up so I'll manage another one before too long.

@ScribbledAdNauseum We came to a bit of a halt because our donate bag started to overflow, but the other day the Charity shop openned up and so we can resume now all the donate stuff is gone

@maggs224 That's great! I am sure it is nice to see that space empty and ready to be filled with more things to be donated. A lot of the stuff I need to get rid of just needs to be tossed. I have to do it in spiels, however, since we can only fit so many trash bags in our bin. The city won't pick it up if the bin is overflowing.

It's good to keep things tidy. I am still trying to throw things away, a project I started several years ago. I have a habit of hiding things away.

@Hannihar Well I think it's good that there is nothing to throw. You have accomplished what you set out to do.

@ScribbledAdNauseum When I started to throw things it felt so good that I wanted to find more to throw. Lately nothing to throw.
