Patient No 6 is False Positive

A week ago, a health worker in our city was found Covid-19 positive when tested using the Rapid Test Kit. However, the good news is, his confirmatory test using the RT-PCR test came out negative.
As I have mentioned in my previous post, I was hoping it was just a false-positive. And it was. This means our city is safe again.
The question is, what's the difference between the two testing methods?

It's better to have a false-positive than a false-negative

@jrlcentral false positive leads to further testing so you can be sure you will have or not have the virus

@jayanth_77 yup. That's what happened to patient #6.
We also had one here who had shown all symptoms and had a travel history whose test results came out negative twice! it was the third test that came out positive.

Not actually unreliable. It simply shows that our body can develop the antibodies needed to fight the virus.
At least that's how i see it.

@jayanth_77 True.. as you mentioned above, the rapid test is looking for the presence of antibodies. And antibodies against a virus would only manifest if that person was exposed to the virus.

@jrlcentral yes the rapid test is not 100% accurate but still reliable .

a false positive must just be terrifying.
we've had the uptick of false positives in the US. of course we've also had an uptick in actual positives as well.

Here, those shows mild symptoms are put under home quarantine. Those who are found positive (even false) or those who show severe symptoms are brought to the designated covid-19 hospital. If they get worse or confirmed that they are really positive, they are brought to the designated covid-19 treatment hospital in a neighboring province which is about two hours' drive away.
So for us here, it could be scary to hear that we have another positive, but we would feel safer because we know that person will be quarantined right away and be closely monitored by their barangay officials.
I guess this protocol helped contain the virus from spreading in our area.

@DocAndersen indeed. The moment the result came out positive could be scary for him. at least he will be now grateful that he is a false positive.

Rapid test checks for the presence of antibodies specific to Corona virus while the RT-PCR test checks for the presence of genetic material of the virus .

Yup. That is correct. It could be that this patient was exposed to the virus but was able to develop the anti-bodies that stopped the virus from developing.

@jayanth_77 In this country, those found positives are quarantined in the hospital while the rest of the household are home-quarantined. He is still in the hospital until the quarantine period is over.

@jrlcentral could be possible. He will still go to preventive home quarantine and retested after a week to see if the virus load had increased and showing symptoms
