Along with Billy Joel I’m doing half of a series of songs with “home” in the title...the country half. The rock half will be along. Meanwhile, here’s some of that headache-inducing country music...by someone who you at least know by name!
#6: Sister’s Coming Home - Willie Nelson
Honestly, at this point, I don’t know why they still call it “Mary Jane.” It should be called “Willie Nelson.”
(Probably because a different spelling of “Willie” has already been claimed for something else.
)
Willie’s an institution. You don’t need a last name. I don’t care how many times you play the Sweet song, when you say “Willie” we know you mean this guy.
And if you’re only familiar with his crossover material, you may not know that he really is country.
I first heard this song when Emmylou Harris covered it in 1979. While her version is about 40 MPH faster in tempo, I still prefer Nelson’s version.

It’s weird that I’d pick Willie’s version, given that Emmylou can sing.
