Opening of Classes during the Pandemic

Everyone was not prepared that because of the pandemic, the schools would not be able to have a proper closing and now, the opening of classes will also be delayed. While some parents are against on having classes during the pandemic, others still want education to continue. Online classes seem to be the best way for students to learn to avoid exposure to people; however, not everyone can afford it. At present, the Department of Education in our country has been preparing alternative modes for students who don't have the capacity to attend online classes. As this is something new to all of us, I wonder how effective will be the instruction using the alternative delivery modes. How about in your country? What are the preparations done by the government when it comes to education?

Our (Japan) international schools were all ready to go online at a moment's notice. We learned that in 2011 after the earthquake and tsunami. We had also done it for typhoon days. The Japanese schools were not prepared at all. After giving the students all of March off, some schools sent paper packets to each house with homework. They then spent most of April and May training teachers to teach online, but not everyone has internet. They are going back June 1 (some prefectures have already been back for a while.) Unprepared was the situation here.

hi @petatonicsca, We have a similar situation here. While others are willing to go the extra mile so they will have the skills to teach online, some teachers are resistant to a sudden change. The problem here are not only the students who cannot afford to go for an online class but also the teachers who are also not willing for a change. So, one of the ways to solve the issue on the difficult of teaching and learning online is just by preparing modules for the students to take home and study.

hi @m_audrey6788, I have read that Germany has a good educational system. Is everyone in Germany has the capacity to go on an online class or are the schools themselves offer those technologies to its students?

@annierose I think the parents and the kids decide what is best for them and if they should return to school or not. This virus is not behind us yet. Schools have opened up here and also they were testing certain grades go for a certain period of time. Now, not sure how it is going. I read that the University will open.
