I have three dozen of these, neatly broken into three categories. And, given that one of those categories is country, I thought I’d better do two a day so as not to contaminate those allergic to country music. Keep the customer satisfied, as Simon & Garfunkel said. Here’s the first song to kick off the countdowns. #12: Chant of the Wanderer - Sons of the Pioneers Linda? Angie? DON’T. You won’t survive the first note. Actually, if you get past the yodeling you might like it. I think this may be the only clarinet duet in recorded country and western music history. And this shows that western and country really were different kinds of music. Eddy Arnold and Hank Williams didn’t sound like this. The Sons of the Pioneers provide us with a little history: thanks to them, Roy Rogers is the only two-time inductee in the Country Music Hall of Fame. There are lots of double-dippers in the Rock hall, but only Leonard Slye in country music. He was a member of the original Sons of the Pioneers (a band that had more members than Congress), and of course he had his own solo career. Oh, and some trivia: remember “Festus” on Gunsmoke, Ken Curtis? He was also a member of the Sons of the Pioneers (not the inducted original group, however). There are Sons of the Pioneers song titles that are well-known (“Tumbling Tumbleweeds” and “Cool Water”). This, although a hit way back when, hasn’t survived in the popularity world. Except in my world: this is my favorite Sons of the Pioneers song. Chant of the Wanderer Written by Bob Nolan Recorded by the Sons of the Pioneers Released as a single, 1941 Take a look at the falls:
