Painting Dillema - Done

Finally things are looking under control with my on-going stairway/hallway painting dillemma. Originally, the walls were just a plain white, but there was a hole showing the paint underneath - which is a green. I just wanted to sand over this ugly green paint spot showing and then re-paint the whole thing this night terra cotta red-ish color that goes well with the tan I recently painted in the surrounding room. Only things did NOT go as planned! After sanding over the green patch, I attempted to just paint right over the white with the terra-cotta red paint, and it looked good at first...Until it started to dry, then it started getting weird and bubbly all over. After painting this whole hallway red, the red paint somehow BONDED with the white paint underneath, and they both started flaking off! Some came off in large chunks and some not so much. I spent about two days chipping away at the red/white paint to try to start over. That's where I got that ugly green/red paint on the right hand side. It was such an eye sore. Finally, I scraped all I could - got rid off almost all of the white/red paint, sanded it all down with an electric sander, and THEN applied two coats of this grey primer paint. THEN - finally - I have re-painted it with two coats of the terra cotta. *AND* it seems to be looking good! OMG! I had been looking online: why would a paint bubble and flake like it did when I applied the red over the white? And couldn't really find the answer. Some places said moisture, some said dirty walls, some said very old or different paints can react differently to one another. I wouldn't have even considering priming the wall before painting it. I don't usually, to be honest, unless I am painting over a darker color. Lesson learned, and I don't want to see a paint brush for the next....couple of months at least. ha ha. What has been your project lately? Hope all is well.

That is a major project you have. Nothing going on here. Replacing the deck but probably when it gets cooler, in the fall.

Nice! Do you do that yourself or hire someone to do so? Best of luck! And I was about at my wits end with this painting job. Ugh! But it’s done and hopefully good now.

No painting's been done in our house since--the early '90's, I think. Maybe the late 80's....? Lately I have so many projects (mostly crafty kind of stuff) that I've had to make a day for each on the calendar to make sure they all get worked on.
