One good thing about doing this three-pronged countdown of songs that don’t have the title mentioned in the lyrics the way that I am doing it: you don’t have to endure just country music on any one day.
(Better yet, you don’t have to get 12 consecutive days of it!
) Here’s today’s classic rock and roll tune that has nary a mention of the song’s title anywhere in the song.
#8: Space Oddity - David Bowie
What a surprise. I guess the main surprise is that it’s this comparatively low on the list, right?
One of the great, classic tunes in the history of the legendary David Bowie, “Space Oddity” is also a poster song for great titles without a mention in lyrics. In fact, except for the word “spaceship” (which is a stretch), Bowie never mentioned either word in the song.
Of course, “Space Oddity” is a play on space odyssey, the partial title of a popular movie at the same time that this song came out originally.
Major Tom just wouldn’t go away. Peter Schilling did a “sequel” of sorts (or a different interpretation of the story, whichever you want to look at it) in “Major Tom (Coming Home),” and Bowie mentioned him again in “Ashes to Ashes” (“we know Major Tom’s a junkie”).
One of the great songs in Bowie’s career!

I was never a big fan of David Bowie and especially of his space songs. But I do remember getting Major Tom and so on in my head when this song was popular.
