@Fa_Maverick When it comes to mere information (which you wanted to have), you get the best result on a site like WIKIPEDIA. If you were looking for opinions, I wouldn't send you there.

There is always wikipedia but I would rather hear it from a horses mouth. Thank you for the link though.

Simply put, democrats are left-leaning, or liberal. Republicans are right-leaning, or conservative. But generally speaking, whether someone here is a democrat or a republican, over 80% of Americans are moderates, which means their political views fall closer to the middle of the spectrum. The extremists in both parties try to divide us and make us think that it is an "us vs. them" world, the truth is that we all are closer together than we think. Of course there are some far-left and far-right individuals who would disagree with my assessment, but overall those extremists make up less than 10% of the population. However, they seem to be the ones who have hijacked our political parties. I am registered as a republican, but I don't always vote along party lines. Some things I am very conservative on, and some things I am liberal on.

@Fa_Maverick Politics seem to be a lot more complicated now than it ever used to be. Nowadays there are divisive factions even within the parties. And there seem to be more non-mainstream parties that are gaining ground. And a lot more people are choosing to register as "independents," meaning they are not affiliating with any party. But the democrats and republicans have a firm grip on power in the government, and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

@moffittjc I wonder why you need to register a party that you are more leaning toward? Or do you need to register at all? Is that required?
